Things to Know Before You Apply

The new year is here, and many of you might be thinking about starting your job search. If that’s you, now is the perfect time to get clear on your next steps. I know this because I’ve been hearing from so many people who are ready to take charge of their careers in 2025!
But before you dive in and start applying for every shiny new role, here are three actions you can take to ensure you’re applying strategically and setting yourself up for success.
1. Reflect on What You Want
Before sending out a single application, spend some time figuring out what you truly want in your next role. A great way to do this is by creating four lists:
Love It: Tasks, cultures, or responsibilities from your past roles that energized you.
Loathe It: Aspects of your previous roles that drained you or didn’t align with your values.
Must Haves: Non-negotiables for your next job (e.g., remote work, flexibility, meaningful mission).
Nice to Haves: Preferences that would enhance your experience but aren’t deal-breakers.
Revisit and refine these lists weekly as you evaluate roles. Use them as a compass to measure how well opportunities align with your goals. Keep in mind that your priorities may shift as your personal or professional circumstances evolve.
2. Target the Right Organizations
It’s tempting to cast a wide net, but focusing your efforts on a shortlist of organizations can be more impactful.
Option 1: You Know Someone-Leverage your network! Reach out to contacts at those organizations, and ask about their culture and values—not just job openings. Building relationships now can position you as a top candidate when roles open.
Option 2: You Don’t Know Anyone-Research organizations you’re interested in and connect with employees on LinkedIn. Not sure how to start? Here’s a message template you can personalize:
Hi [Name],I admire the work you’re doing at [Organization] and wanted to connect. I’m starting to explore my next career move, and your insights about [specific role or field] would mean a lot. If you’re open to it, I’d love to chat for 20 minutes to learn more about your experience.
3. Find a Job Search Buddy
The job search process can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Partnering with someone who’s also on the hunt can help you stay accountable and motivated.
